In 1897 a Camden Resident built a carriage road to the summit of Mount Battie and a hotel called the Summit House. The Summit House eventually was bought and turned into a social center. Unfortunately, in 1918, a forest fire burned the entire mountaintop and ultimately led to the tearing down of the Summit House since it wasn’t getting a lot of visitors. A few years later, the Mt Battie Tower was built where the Summit House once stood, and now you can climb to the top of the tower to take in the beautiful views.
