Moxie Falls Overview

How to Get to Moxie Falls

Moxie Falls is among the tallest waterfalls in Maine, standing over 90 feet tall, and is in Northern Maine near The Forks. The Forks is a small town along the Old Canada Road Scenic Byway, and the trailhead to Moxie Falls is right off Route 201, making it easy to find.

Since Moxie Falls is in Northern Maine, there is no quick way to get there. No matter where you are coming from, it takes a bit of time to get to the trailhead, but I promise, it is worth the drive!

Since it is a long drive, I recommend spending the day exploring the surrounding area. The Forks and Jackman have many other fun things to do, and it is easily one of my favorite places in Maine. It has other waterfalls, beautiful hikes, a scenic drive, and other fun activities.

Moxie Falls Trail Length and Difficulty

The Moxie Falls Trail is an easy 2.1-mile round-trip hike. The trail is relatively flat, only gaining about 230 feet of elevation, making it great for the entire family to enjoy!

From the parking lot, the trail slowly descends to various viewpoints near Moxie Falls. Although each overlook has views, the best is at the end across from the waterfall. Trust me, you will quickly fall in love once you see Moxie Falls from this viewpoint!

Best Time to Visit Moxie Falls

The hike to Moxie Falls is open year-round, and I have a few friends who have hiked it every season. Although it is beautiful in any season, the best time to visit is after the snow melts in spring when the water volume is the largest or in the fall when it has vibrant foliage.

My favorite time to visit is in the fall because the foliage in this area of Maine is always stunning. The trail leading to Moxie Falls was surrounded by beautiful yellows, and the waterfall had some foliage mixed in with the pines around it. But no matter when you visit, you will enjoy the views!

What to Pack for Hiking to Moxie Falls

Although the hike to Moxie Falls is not strenuous, you should still have the appropriate hiking gear. You should have supportive shoes with good traction, like hiking boots, layers for the time of year you are hiking, and a backpack with water, snacks, and layers. And last but not least, make sure to pack the Ten Essentials.

Hiking Guide to Moxie Falls in Maine

**Always remember to leave no trace. It is crucial to pack out what you pack in and throw away your trash properly. It is also crucial to only hike on the designated trails to avoid damaging restoration areas and fragile vegetation.

Moxie Falls is my favorite waterfall in Maine because it is breathtaking! New England is not known for its waterfalls, so I was not expecting much when I began exploring the waterfalls in Maine. The first time I hiked to it, I was shocked that a waterfall like Moxie Falls existed in Maine. And I was even more shocked that it was not crowded.

The best part is the hike to Moxie Falls is not strenuous. The trail is easy to follow, bringing you to a few viewpoints of the waterfall. The final overlook is my favorite and worth the hike to see Moxie Falls!

The Moxie Falls Trailhead is on Lake Moxie Road off Route 201 in The Forks. Route 201 has signs pointing to the trailhead, making it easy to find. The parking is not huge, but you should not have issues finding parking most of the year. If you visit in the fall, I recommend arriving in the morning because the trail becomes crowded around midday.

From the parking lot, Moxie Falls Trail travels through a beautiful forest on a well-maintained, relatively flat path. This section of the trail is where I fell in love during the fall because I was surrounded by vibrant yellow foliage. It was one of the most stunning trails!

After about a half-mile, the Moxie Falls Trail begins to descend stairs towards the river leading to the waterfall. The trail has a few viewpoint platforms, with the first being above the falls. I did not love this viewpoint because I could not see the falls much, so I recommend continuing to the final overlook.

The Moxie Falls Trail leads to the final viewing platform across from the waterfall, offering breathtaking views. I loved seeing how huge Moxie Falls was from this overlook! It is the perfect place to take photos of the waterfall, too.

I stayed at the final viewpoint for over a half-hour because I could not get over how stunning Moxie Falls was. Luckily, the trail was not crowded, so I set up my tripod and took many photos.

Once you are finished enjoying the waterfall, you can walk back the way you came on Moxie Falls Trail toward the parking lot. If you did not stop at the other viewpoints, you can easily do so on your hike back, too!

Moxie Falls is easily my favorite waterfall in Maine (maybe even in New England), so I know once you visit, you will fall in love with it. It is worth the drive, I promise!
